One of Shakespeare’s longest and most celebrated plays, Hamlet tells the story of the prince of Denmark and his steady descent into a world of madness and deception as he seeks revenge for his father’s murder. Along the way, Hamlet grapples with many different themes including the uncertainty of death, the desolation of moral values, and the price of vengeance.
Hamlet is still considered a powerful and important tragedy today, and has been adapted several times on both stage and screen since it was first written in 1602. It resonates with audiences on both a surface and visceral level, with its exciting action sequences and stories of betrayal, as well as offering speculation into the stability of the world around us. Hamlet refuses to pull back in its examination of the human world, and it always leaves you asking that pivotal question:
“To be or not to be”?
We were delighted to tackle such a multifaceted work as the first installment of our Machinima Shakespeare Project. Arena Net's rich, medieval fantasy world of Guild Wars 2 © serves as the backdrop for this philosophical soap opera*. The beautiful art style of the game supports the themes of the play with its vibrant backdrops. Viewers are led along a journey of ambiguous reality as the sensual court keeps the surface level visually pleasant, while Claudius’s path to the throne and Hamlet’s quest for revenge slowly destroy the characters one by one.
